Our Chemical Process Development group is a team of organic chemists, analytical chemists, and chemical engineers working together to design novel syntheses from raw materials to supply new medicines to patients. Our scientists focus on developing safe, economical, sustainable, and robust processes to support clinical trials and the launch of new medicines across various drug modalities including small molecules, peptides, oligonucleotides, and antibody drug conjugates. The work is driven by innovative science, data-driven decision-making, and collaborative teamwork. The scientific knowledge package from the manufacturing process, design parameters, and control strategies enables regulatory filings to bring these novel medicines to patients worldwide.

Role & Responsibilities:

  • Provide process hazard evaluation of processes to manufacture strategic materials, chemical intermediates, active pharmaceutical ingredients, and dust hazards associated with excipient blends and other BMS materials through experimentation, data collection and interpretation.  Collaborates broadly to identify safety issues and influence process design towards intrinsically safe processes.
  • Organize and communicate results orally and in written format to diverse groups and multiple levels of management within BMS and to external partners.                                   
  • Effectively use a variety of instruments and techniques in support of process research and development; conduct all safety evaluation tests following standardized testing procedures; customize procedures and testing as needed to meet project goals. 
  • Influence, facilitate, and lead by taking initiative in problem solving within team environment; generates ideas and alternatives by evaluating the potential outcome of various project directions; utilize literature based solutions.
  • Coordinate safety testing efforts of internal and external laboratories (including vendor safety testing laboratories) to enable process introduction to global integrated development and manufacturing network.
  • Develop and implement testing strategy to support chemical registrations (e.g. REACH) in different regions of the world.
  • Manage multiple projects and activities simultaneously and within established priorities; ability to manage prioritization of projects as required.

Experience & Qualifications:

  • BS in Chemistry related field or Chemical Engineering with 2-5 years of related industrial experience in process development or hazard evaluation, or an advance degree with 0-2 years of related industrial experience in process development or hazard evaluation.
  • Pharmaceutical industry experience is preferred.
  • Strong technical skills (chemistry, chemical processing equipment, calorimeters), with previous experience in safety testing, hazard evaluation, plant operations, process development and scale up, and clinical material manufacturing are also desired.
  • Candidate must possess excellent problem solving, verbal and written communication skills and be able to work effectively with multiple assignments.
  • Candidate must be able to work independently with minimum supervision.
