Position Summary:

Multiple openings, starting May - June 2025 and lasting up to 1 year, are available for part-time co-ops to be responsible for weekend mammalian cell culture operations. Routine job functions include but are not limited to: sub-culturing of seed cultures in shake flasks and cell bags, sampling cell culture studies (including shake flasks or bench-scale bioreactors), bioreactor monitoring, manipulation of nutrient and glucose feed in bioreactors / shake flasks, work with a Tecan robotic liquid handler, Ambr15/250, 200L/500L single-use bioreactors, and documentation in electronic lab notebooks. 

The part-time co-ops will report directly to an Upstream Scientist on one-half weekday and consult with upstream project leads to review responsibilities for the weekend. Routine hours will include one half-day during the week (typically Friday up to 4 hours), plus up to 6 hours for each weekend day worked. The option to work both Saturday and Sunday is potentially available.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Hands-on operation and maintenance of several mammalian cell cultures in shake flasks and bench-scale bioreactors.

  • Multi-task to support simultaneous upstream experiments across numerous projects.

  • Perform documentation and monitoring of cell culture trends.

  • Elevate any anomalous bioreactor behavior observed to full-time employees and assist in troubleshooting efforts.

  • Support high-throughput cell culture experiments and process scale-up activities.

  • Demonstrate accountability in maintaining the integrity of critical experiments over the weekends.

Key Competencies:

  • Candidates who are currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a field related to chemical engineering, bio-chemical engineering, or biology preferred.

  • Working knowledge of aseptic technique for maintenance and scale-up of mammalian cell cultures preferred.

  • Competent computer skills. Experience working with electronic lab notebooks preferred.

  • Capable of working independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Exemplary attention to detail and dependability.
