Job Summary:

The primary focus of this role is to support Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) as the Senior Specialist of EHS for the Seattle Sites within the Department of Environmental, Occupational Health, Safety and Sustainability (EOHSS).

This role revolves around engaging end users where they work. The role also encompasses overseeing safety programs and delivering training for various safety procedures. The senior specialist will also engage in compliance activities, self-assessments, and audits to uphold environmental, safety, and sustainability standards. As a key contact for EHS inquiries, the specialist will collaborate with multiple departments, lead EHS culture initiatives, and support training programs. Additionally, the role involves conducting risk assessments and continuously improving EHS processes and workflows. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, safety, medical surveillance and sustainability laws, regulations, codes, rules, and consensus guides. 
  • Develop and implement new EHS programs, policies, and procedures and update and improve existing ones.
  • Develop, create, maintain, and distribute EHS reports, and records as assigned.
  • Serve as subject matter expert (SME) for Industrial Hygiene, Chemical Hygiene, Biosafety and Bloodborne Pathogens Programs. Maintain chemical and biological inventories for the site.
  • Manage site biosafety programs, services, inspections, and resources for staff at multiple sites. Assess risks involved with the research programs and bring new pathogens or other biologicals for review with the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). Coordinate the site Institutional Biosafety Committee and provide technical assistance as needed. Lead and manage biological safety, EHS trainings pertaining to biosafety topics, and other programs.
  • Develop and provide EHS training to personnel, including but not limited to new hire employee orientation, biological safety, laboratory safety, and subsequent refresher trainings. Maintain records of EHS training in appropriate database.
  • Work with staff to promote a positive safety culture and ensure compliance to all safety requirements. Lead safety inspections and other audit programs. Prepare and track incident investigations and reports.
  • Responsible for the retention of data associated with the occupational health programs including reproductive health and family planning, vaccination program, respiratory program, risk assessments, incidents, near misses, etc. Work with the occupational health nurse to manage and follow up with investigations and reports. 
  • Responsible for using EOHSS platforms including modules for investigation, inspection, compliance, and occupational safety. 
  • Participates in EOHSS operational and tier discussions, EOHSS committees and teams; and EOHSS self-assessments, inspections, GEMBAs, and audits.
  • Challenges the status quo and brings new approaches to continually improve the effectiveness of workflows and processes and learn and apply new concepts.
  • Review and ensure accurate and complete resolution of issues as they arise and escalates concerns, resource constraints, or needs with urgency to appropriate leaders in the organization.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in chemistry, the biological sciences, industrial hygiene or related scientific fields
  • Minimum of 4 years of directly related EHS experience, preferably in a Biopharmaceutical or medical device manufacturing or laboratory environment. 
  • Experience with incidents and/or learning systems databases. (e.g., Enablon, Intelex, Success Factors, etc.)
  • Experience related to the EHS federal and state regulations.
  • Hands on laboratory experience with hazardous chemicals is preferred.
  • Previous experience related to the EHS federal and state regulations (EPA, MassDEP, OSHA, etc.) preferred.
  • Ability to take initiative and adapt to frequently changing priorities simultaneously and think creatively, critically, and strategically to solve problems in a complex environment.
  • Experience handling confidential information and sensitive issues in a diplomatic manner to ensure integrity and confidentiality.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a proclivity for partnership and collaboration with peers, all levels of management, cross-functional teams at site and EHS above site teams.

The starting compensation for this job is a range from $82,000 - $102,000, plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility). 


The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed.


Final, individual compensation will be decided based on demonstrated experience.
