Our Responsible Sourcing Program (RSP) is designed to provide enhanced visibility of our suppliers' sustainability and social impact risks and performance and to encourage continuous improvement across the BMS supply chain through ongoing management and engagement.

We will work collaboratively with our suppliers to set goals and targets, and tackle together the many challenges of a complex supply chain. Over time, our expectation is that our suppliers meet specific requirements while simultaneously demonstrating leadership and innovation.

BMS is committed to reaching net-zero carbon emissions across our value chain by 2050. As of 2024, our near-term and net-zero science-based targets are validated by the independent Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

Part of the commitment is towards "Scope 3" emissions, or those resulting from an organization’s supply chain, where BMS is taking the supplier engagement approach of requesting our suppliers with significant carbon emissions to have set their own science-based targets by 2028. Top-emitting suppliers are requested to commit to and set Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approved science-based targets with an approval deadline of 2028.

BMS is a member of the Climate Disclosure Project (CDP) supply chain program. The CDP is an independent, not-for-profit organization that holds the largest database of primary corporate climate change information in the world. Top-emitting suppliers, and any partners interested in supporting our commitment to addressing the environmental risks of our supply chain, are requested to fill out the CDP climate change questionnaire annually.

As the next step in addressing emissions across the BMS value chain, we are proud to announce the launch of the BMS supplier decarbonization accelerator to help equip our suppliers to set their own decarbonization targets. This series of monthly webinars, written resources and free consulting sessions with a sustainability advisor is designed to move your company closer to an externally validated decarbonization target.

We know that establishing a climate target is a significant step, which is why we have created a BMS Supplier Decarbonization Accelerator Whitepaper, with our partners, Trio. This technical guide serves as a resource for suppliers who are considering, or actively working toward setting greenhouse gas reduction targets. It includes information on why target setting is important, what to consider when getting started, and how to set and validate science-based greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.

BMS suppliers with renewable energy commitments or aspiring to reduce electricity emissions are encouraged to join Energize. Energize is a first-of-its-kind collaboration of 20 pharmaceutical companies to increase the opportunities for renewable electricity and decarbonization in the pharmaceutical supply chain. It is designed to help pharmaceutical and healthcare suppliers learn about renewable electricity purchasing and contracting.

Any BMS supplier engaged in the manufacture of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) for BMS with need to accelerate their sustainability capabilities is encouraged to join Project Activate. API manufacturing is a resource, material and energy-intensive process with a substantial environmental footprint. Project Activate works with suppliers by focusing on the high levels of interconnectivity across healthcare supply chains, strengthening supplier capabilities through enhanced measurement, goal setting support, provisioning of tools, access to green financing and more.

BMS suppliers engaged in lab work and interested in reducing the environmental impact of their lab is encouraged to pursue a My Green Lab Certification through the Converge initiative. Converge is a collaborative initiative through My Green Lab, the world’s leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the sustainability of scientific research, for suppliers with a large research footprint to reduce the environmental impact of their labs. 

Any supplier interested in collaborating to promote and learn industry-wide ESG best practices is encouraged to participate in the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative (PSCI) and explore their resources for understanding core ESG domains. The PSCI is a non-profit organization that brings members together to define, establish, and promote responsible supply chain practices, human rights, environmental sustainability, and responsible business practices.
