Virology & Oncology M.D. Fellows Research Program

Bristol-Myers Squibb supports two Fellowship Research Training Programs in both the Virology and Oncology therapeutic areas. These programs are key components of an ongoing and concerted effort by Bristol-Myers Squibb to advance research and understanding in the areas of HIV/AIDS, chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV), and Oncology.

Please note that the application period for the 2010-2011 program is now closed. The 2011-2012 application period will open on November 1, 2010.

Goals of the Program

  • Support studies that will further strengthen the science and knowledge of HIV/AIDS, HBV, and Oncology
  • Support the development of future clinical researchers

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be an active Fellow accepted to or in good standing in an ACGME-accredited Fellows training program in the 2011-2012 academic year
  • Desire to enhance knowledge and skill development in the area of HIV/AIDS, HBV, or Oncology research
  • Must identify a faculty member to serve as project mentor at the applicant’s institution

Enrollment and Funding

  • Fellows will be selected for the 2011-2012 academic year
  • Training grant awards up to $20,000 to support research-related expenses for a 1-year research period
  • Total training grant amount is inclusive of indirect costs and associated IRB fees and is not permitted for use towards travel to conferences or for durable equipment

Term & Conditions

  • Rationale The project must address a legitimate medical or scientific question and not duplicate other planned or conducted research unless justified on a scientific or medical basis.
  • Sponsor The applicant (investigator, cooperative group, institution, network) must be qualified and capable of conducting the proposed study in compliance with the U.S. Food & Drug Administrations Good Clinical Practices. The sponsor must comply with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements and must not be the subject of any legal or regulatory restrictions or sanctions.
  • Medical appropriateness of proposed research The proposed research must be reasonably likely to produce results that could beneficially impact medical therapy for the condition being investigated.
  • Scientific validity The proposed study procedures must fulfill the stated objectives of the study.
  • Ethical considerations The study must be designed to meet ethical guidelines concerning human subjects in research (for interventional research).
  • Financial support Funding requests must reasonably reflect the cost and effort involved and should not be used to defray normal operating expenses of the sponsor-investigator or institution that are not directly related to the supported research. An executed research agreement must be in place prior to any study commencing.
  • All applicable regulatory requirements, including but not limited to study registration and results disclosure, must be observed.
  • Publication of study results The results of the research will be collected and analyzed and a report of the study will be prepared and planned for potential publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
  • Priority We consider requests for research in all areas, and give priority to proposals which correspond to the fellowship proposals for Virology and Oncology.
    All support for investigator-sponsored research is awarded at the sole discretion of Bristol-Myers Squibb based on the criteria set forth above.

How to apply:

  1. Select the therapeutic area and investigational product of interest, if applicable
  2. Review the research proposals to determine whether there is an interest in submitting an application/LOI
  3. Take note of the RFP number in front of the research proposal description (i.e. RFP-10-AB123-456). This number is required when completing the application.
  4. Click on the RFP number of interest to access the application
  5. Login to the application utilizing your e-mail address and password (create a new password if this is the first time accessing the application system)
  6. Complete the demographic fields on the application
  7. Upload the required documents as PDF files. A LOI, CV, Good Standing Letter, and Letter of Recommendation are required. Please note that the Letter of Recommendation can be sent (if preferred) directly to virology.fellows@bms.com or oncology.fellows@bms.com depending on what program you are interested in.
